island vs wall mount range hood

There are two possibilities for the location of your World CopperSmith range hood: your wall or your ceiling.

These correspond based on an intuitive principle. Your vent hood must be directly above your cooktop, regardless of its power or whether it is a ducted or ductless range hood.

This means that stoves along walls must have wall-mounted range hoods or under-cabinet range hoods.

Can you put a range hood over an island?

range hood over an island

Absolutely, and in fact, this is the only effective means of ventilating an island range.

Island range hoods are installed into your ceiling directly above your stove, where they capture the harmful exhaust produced by cooking and purify your air.

What is the difference between a wall-mount and an island range hood?

island and wall mount range hood difference

Functioning identically, the only difference between a wall-mounted range hood and an island hood is the shape of the hood opening and the specifics of installation.

Wall-mount range hoods (sometimes called a wall chimney hood) open to the side, where the hood affixes to the wall. Island hoods open at the top, where they connect to the ceiling.

Can you use an island range hood on a wall?

While theoretically possible to install an island hood close enough to the wall to function, there's no real reason to and it may diminish the effectiveness of the hood (being not flush with the wall, the capture area could be disrupted).

If you have cabinetry above your stove, the better option would be an under-cabinet range hood. Under-cabinet hoods are the perfect solution for conserving space and the aesthetic coherence of your cabinets.

Some try to get around this problem by opting for downdraft range hoods, which capture exhaust from below your stove. However, this method is demonstrably less effective and as such is not carried by CopperSmith.

How do you vent an island range hood?

how to vent island range hood

Venting an island range hood can prove to be more cumbersome than wall-mounted hoods, as the necessary ductwork must lead through the ceiling to its egress.

For this reason, island hoods are more likely to be ductless range hoods. While this is by no means a rule, it tends to be a popular choice.

If you're looking for a quiet range hood, ducted range hoods tend to produce less noise, as their insert fan can be located farther from your space along the ductwork or at the point of ventilation on the outside of your home.

What is a good CFM for an island range hood?

what is a good cfm

The cubic feet per minute (of removed air) is the measure of your insert fan's power. While your requirements are highly individual, it can be generalized that most average kitchens need around 600 CFM. Island stoves can release fumes in a wider area (following the geometry of the space, where a wall stove is corralled by the wall), so it may be advisable to choose a higher CFM for your island hood.
