All types of interior design have something wonderful to bring to the table, and over the years, we have been fortunate to see CopperSmith products incorporated into just about every different type of project. From modern and minimal to transitional, industrial, eclectic, and beyond, our pieces have played a central role in some amazing spaces.
With that said, there is something about a welcoming rustic design that will always be a treat. We love it when our hoods and sinks are incorporated into a rustic kitchen design, as is the case with this project in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Homeowner Daphne Branton did a wonderful job with this remodel, and we’d love to share more about the results with you below.
Classic Elements of Rustic Design
It’s not always easy to put a design into a specific design category at first glance. Most designs incorporate elements of various styles, and that is certainly true even in this kitchen. However, right from the first look, you can get a sense that the idea behind this design was to embrace big, bold rustic elements, as those are the things that grab your attention first.
The exposed beams are a perfect example. Two huge wood beams run across the length of the kitchen, integral to both the structure of the home and the design of the space. Those beams could have easily been wrapped and finished another way to take the design in a different direction, but they were left as-is to set the tone for a rustic appearance. As a nice tie-in, the boards that run diagonally up to the peak of the ceiling also stay true to the rustic theme and go perfectly with the beams.
For all the beauty of the beams, they might not be the most rustic of the elements found in this kitchen. That award goes to the impressive stonework that rises from the back of the stove and extends all the way to the ceiling. Those stones give the kitchen a firmly earthy vibe and make sure that any modern touches introduced to the space won’t go too far.
The Artisan AT3 Plays a Starring Role
The wonderful stone work behind the stove really makes this kitchen, but we can’t talk about the stones without mentioning the Artisan AT3 range hood that was placed right in the middle of the rocks. This is not usually how our range hoods are mounted in kitchens across the country, and we have to say, we love it. This is such a creative way to incorporate a rustic copper range hood into the kitchen, and the shape of the AT3 fits just right in that spot.
Of course, as with all CopperSmith orders, the Brantons also had some customization choices to make as part of their order. We think they got those just right, as well. The Weathered Copper finish is ideal for the rustic theme, as is the addition of straps in that same Weathered Copper finish. The look of the weathered copper hood in this kitchen is muted enough not to take over the space completely, while coordinating nicely with the stone work behind it. If they had gone with something flashier and shinier, it might have been too much, and may have visually cancelled out the lovely rustic elements that are already in place.
Look Closely for Detailed Craftsmanship
It’s easy to think of rustic design as using materials that would have been favored a couple of generations ago. That’s part of it, but it doesn’t capture everything this design style is about. Just as importantly, rustic design demands quality craftsmanship and attention to detail, as those were valued traits during the period that is being represented by this design ethic.
If you look closely in this kitchen, there is one specific place where quality craftsmanship steps to the forefront. Where the range hood meets the stone work on the wall, some very detailed manipulation of the trim had to be performed in order to mate the two nicely. The rough stone surface and the flat back of the hood don’t play nicely together, of course, which is where the wood trim came to the rescue. Thanks to a skilled hand and plenty of patience, the finished product came out beautifully.
Bringing in a Touch of Modern
Most of this kitchen leans in the rustic direction, and it does so beautifully. The elements we have highlighted already, like the stone wall, the exposed beams, and the boards up to the peak in the ceiling, all give this space a farmhouse kitchen style.
That’s not to say it’s all traditional, however. Perhaps the biggest modern piece included in the layout is the large stainless steel stove, where all the wonderful food prepared for the family comes to life. There are also little touches like the lights that hang down on either side of the stove, which are more modern than traditional. The exposed shelving can actually fall in both categories, as it’s somewhat rustic but also could be seen as modern, given the current popularity of that trend.
The Right Hood for the Right Space
With the high ceiling in this kitchen, and the scale of the stunning stone work behind the stove, it would have been easy for the hood to get lost in the shuffle. It was going to take a hood that was both big and beautiful to stand up in this room and look right at home, and CopperSmith is pleased to have delivered such a product.
