copper sink properties

What Grade of Copper Do I Need?

When you select your copper sink, you might have questions about the grade of copper used to craft this item. If there’s one statement that’s true regarding metalwork and things like this sink, it’s that you definitely get what you pay for.

The last thing you want is a subpar quality copper sink. You’ll be impacted later by ending up with a damaged and worn-down sink.

Kitchen sinks with an efficient process are made of 99% copper and only 1% or less zinc. Unfortunately, cheaper copper sinks advertised as budget kitchen items contain lead and mercury, both unhealthy and potentially deadly substances.

Copper is similar to stainless steel in that the thickness is described using a rating known as the “gauge.” The lower the gauge is, the thicker and more durable the copper. You can tell when a sink is crafted from a lower gauge copper by listening to it when water is running. Copper sinks created with a lower-quality gauge will produce a tin-like sound.

In addition, they’ll also be susceptible to a high level of water damage and have a much shorter life. CopperSmith 30” copper sinks use a 16 gauge thickness.

When browsing for copper sinks, look for lower gauges or the term “annealed.” Annealed copper is just as durable as using a lower gauge of copper.

Not every sink uses seams during its construction. However, if they do, you want the seams to be welded and not soldered. Soldered sinks attach the seams using a weak bond, so there’s a high chance it will leak and split apart as time continues.

You’ll have multiple configurations with CopperSmith sinks or copper hoods, including single, double, and triple bowls. Decide which bowl configuration works best for you based on your usage and cleaning habits.

If you usually find yourself washing larger loads of dishes and enjoy having additional space to work with, Double bowls are perfect if you like separating your dishes based on type when you wash. This setup is also efficient if you want one side for washing and another for rinsing.

The copper farmhouse design is excellent when you want the texture and design of the sink to contrast with other elements in the kitchen. The front apron displays the beautiful design elements of your 30” copper sink.

30” Copper Sink Patina: Options for Preservation and Cleaning

cleaning copper sinks

Copper has an incredible property to it that makes it highly unique. Over time, copper develops what’s known as a patina (pattern). This is also referred to as a living finish. The patina is a distinct pattern that extends over the finish of the copper surface over time after exposure to air, water, and other elements of nature leave their marks.

This is known as tarnishing to some, but to others, it provides a beautiful finish that gives copper surfaces character. Be mindful regarding orange and lemon juice exposure, as these will strip the patina. However, if this happens, rest assured it will return after a certain period.

If you notice that your copper has turned a greenish color, don’t worry. First, it rarely happens on indoor copper. If it does, or you don’t like the patina shown, keep the copper dry when you’re not using it. Rinse it thoroughly after each use and refrain from using any acidic cleaners.

You can also use copper wax or furniture polish to coat the sink after each use. This drastically slows down the progression of the patina. If you want to strip off the patina completely you don’t want visible, use a copper polish ONCE per year. Any additional frequency will damage the finish of your sink.

When you use the copper polish, stop after you achieve the look you want. Apply clear lacquer to preserve the look and freeze the patina in time.

How Do I Clean Copper Without Damaging It?

If you want to clean your 30” copper sink, there are several ways of accomplishing this without worrying about damage. Copper is highly durable and will keep its strength for the long haul. The only thing you have to be mindful of is scratches and scuffs. You may also notice little dings and dents if you’re not careful but choosing a finish that conceals this can provide a beautiful look, and you’ll never see any difference. Otherwise, keep any materials away from the sink that is heavy enough to dent it.

Maintaining

Copper is a bit more complex than other metals. However, it’s not considered high maintenance or impossible to take care of. It just needs a little extra TLC. You’re also trading extra care because it’s antimicrobial and protects you from germs and bacteria.

Use the following tips to keep your 30” copper sink protected from any damage:

  • Refrain from using abrasive chemicals, cleaners, or stiff bristle brushes
  • Avoid extended exposure to lemon, orange, pineapple, mustard, hot sauce, and other highly acidic materials. If they do contact your copper sink, rinse quickly.
  • Use mild soap and water for cleaning. This is more than enough to get the copper clean.
  • Dry using a soft cloth after each time you use the sink.
  • Using a wax will help you avoid water spots and mineral deposits on your 30” copper sink. When water stops beading on your sink’s surface, it’s time for a new coat of wax.
  • You can find copper sink cleansers at hardware stores that do an excellent job cleaning without damage.
