The Farmhouse Look for Today’s Homeowner

There are still plenty of people who live on real, working, living farms. In today’s world, however, those people are the exception rather than the rule. The majority of the population lives in cities and doesn’t do a bit of farming at any point in life. 

Against that backdrop, it’s become necessary for homeowners interested in modern farmhouse design to use this approach in a logical, strategic way. Creating a kitchen that looks like it was transported from a farm into the suburbs, for example, doesn’t make a ton of sense. Instead, it’s smarter to pick out certain elements that evoke the feelings that the farmhouse look is supposed to stir up without taking things too far

A Range Hood is a Perfect Defining Element

Every kitchen needs a statement piece to stand out from the rest of the components as the highlight. Cabinets and counters are often tasked with that duty, but the problem is that those are elements that are found in every kitchen. The cabinets have straight lines and modern fixtures, with the white paint of the cabinet fronts offset by the dark handles. The counters are also white with some gray marbling to add visual interest. Hanging above the island are unique light fixtures with a dark finish – these lights are the other component that really gives this kitchen some farmhouse credentials. 

One other design choice that can’t be overlooked is the creative use of lighting. There are lights set inside the top cabinets, with glass fronts allowing those lights to be shared with the room while the doors are closed. It’s a creative touch that makes the whole room feel even warmer and more welcoming. 

Perfectly Pairing Design and Geography

It’s always a mistake to look at design in a vacuum. When looking at the pictures of a kitchen design, you can easily lose track of the context of that kitchen and how it fits in the world around it. By zooming out a bit, you can get the whole picture and better understand why this kitchen is such a perfect fit for the home where it resides. 

This house is in Virginia Beach, Virginia. As the name suggests, that city is perched on the Atlantic coastline, and as a result, life there revolves around beautiful blue waters, bright sunny skies, and endless miles of beaches. A dark kitchen with traditional, ornate touches just wouldn’t feel right in a house that is steps from a day on the beach. 

Of course, that’s not what we have here. Most of the kitchen is bright, with white used throughout, along with ample lighting and a wonderful contrast wall painted in blue. The dark elements are used with restraint, including the fixtures, and of course, the impressive CopperSmith hood. It would be hard to have any objections with this kitchen, no matter where it was found, but in Virginia Beach, it’s just perfect.
