Living on the water is a dream for many. Looking out a kitchen window to see beautiful blue water just steps away is like a scene out of a luxury vacation that is simply repeated day after day. Of course, when that water is found in the warm and sunny state of Florida, the experience is only that much better.

For the Cress family, their home in Windermere needed a kitchen that would live up to what is waiting just outside the back door. Clearly, a simple, generic design wouldn’t get the job done in this kind of setting, so they set about creating something amazing. And, judging by the pictures below, we think you’ll agree they accomplished just that – with a little help from a CopperSmith range hood along the way.
Designing for the Florida Waterfront Lifestyle
Among the pictures of this impressive kitchen that we have included on this page, perhaps the best is the one that looks directly down the length of the kitchen and out toward the water. Without actually standing in the home, that’s the one that really gives the best sense of the setting that this home occupies and why it was so important for the design to fit in perfectly with the landscape.
So, what does it mean to design with the landscape in mind? First, it means that as much of the outdoors as possible should be invited inside a lakefront kitchen design. That is achieved thanks to the wall of windows at the far end of the kitchen, in this case. Whenever the sun is shining, which is often in Florida, this kitchen will be filled with the kind of warmth and light that is abundant in this part of the world.
Also, the choice of colors in the space is influenced by nature. Specifically, the green paint on the cabinets and the light blue backsplash wonderfully mimic the greens and blues that mark the terrain. For a nice contrast, and as a nod to the trunks of the trees outside, the island cabinetry is a dark wood tone, as are a couple of cabinet doors on either side of the range.
The Art of Scale
In many ways, it’s a designer’s dream to have a huge kitchen to work with. After all, who wouldn’t want plenty of space to let their imagination run wild? Sure, a great kitchen can be created in a small space, but there are some limits. The Cress family certainly has a big kitchen, meaning they had to make strategic choices to make sure it looked great in the end.

For a kitchen to scale up properly, all of the various components need to be big enough not to get lost or overwhelmed by the space. Certainly, the range hood gets the job done in terms of size, and we’ll talk more about that later. Just the same, the extra-wide range provides a big cooking surface, and the island is an enormous place to prepare every possible type of meal.
Even the choice of flooring allowed this kitchen to stand up to its own size. The huge black and white tiles arranged in a checkerboard pattern were a fitting selection that kept with the theme of everything in this space being bigger than life.
Customizing the Premier PR4 Perfectly
As their design started to come together, Whitney and Marshall Cress decided that the Premier PR4 range hood from CopperSmith was the ideal option for their project. Not only did the PR4 check the right boxes in terms of aesthetics, but it could also handle the significant ventilation duties that needed to be managed over the top of such a large stove.
The shape of this hood allowed them to fit it in perfectly with the cabinetry on either side of the range. It doesn’t stick out too far as to be impractical, but it stands out enough to make a statement. Also, the finishing touches that they selected made this hood a great fit in the kitchen, with a Light Antique Brass finish and Smooth body texture. There were also Light Antique Brass straps and rivets added to the hood to give it a slightly more industrial, rugged appearance.
Trying to buy a prefabricated hood for this unique space would have been difficult, if not impossible. Working with a partner like CopperSmith was the only way to bring the vision to life correctly, and we think you will agree that they got it just right.
A Huge Hood That Blends In Seamlessly
By any measure, this is a massive range hood for a residential kitchen. It is a whopping 88.5’’ wide, as compared to many of our other custom metal range hoods, which come in 36’’ or 48’’ widths. It’s also three feet tall, meaning this hood takes up a major portion of the wall on which it is mounted, yet this custom kitchen centerpiece doesn’t overwhelm the space in any way.

Looking at the pictures of this kitchen, you can see that while this is a big hood, it is only one of many notable components in the space. The backsplash, large range, big island, and gold faucets also all contribute their own unique touches, as well. In a different kitchen, this hood would be dominating and out of place. Here, however, it’s just right.
Making an Unforgettable Statement
The design the Cress family settled on for their new kitchen in Windermere, Florida took the range hood to levels rarely seen in a residential kitchen. This huge hood, along with everything else in the space, came out perfectly. We couldn’t be more impressed with the results and are so happy that we got to play an important role in the project.
