While this may not be the first appliance that comes to mind during a kitchen remodel, you will have to think of your range hood. At CopperSmith, we know that it can be daunting for homeowners to approach a kitchen redesign project. Most projects will consider the kitchen layout, with an island or not, the cabinet design, and the fridge and kitchen hob functionality.

But, here is why range hood ideas must also be your top priority as part of a redesign. The range hood is an essential appliance in your kitchen. Range hoods serve the purpose of removing smoke, odors, and pollutants generated at the point of cooking. As such, you want to start thinking of the best range hood ideas to enhance the style and functionality of the kitchen.

We will review some of the different ideas for range hoods when it comes to the different types of range hoods, their sizes, the installation process, the different styles available, and how range hoods can also be a focal point in your decor.

Vent Hood Ideas: The Difference Between Range Hoods & Vent Hoods

It is important to understand that there is more than one option available when looking for an appliance that provides ventilation while cooking. So, you may come across two terms: Range hoods and vent hoods. Bear in mind that both appliances operate differently.

Indeed, a range hood will push the air out of the system. The vent hood has a pull-down fan that draws the air into the system. Additionally, the range hood is capable of filtering grease and cooking odors. On the other hand, a vent hood can only filter grease.

Defining which appliance you need will come down to a few considerations:

  • High quality range hoods are more affordable
  • Range hoods are not recommended for small kitchens
  • Range hoods are best suited for frequent and regular cooking

Range Hood Ideas for Tech Lovers

Can a range hood become part of your smart home design? Smart home technology is everywhere, from setting up temperatures to adjusting your entertainment system. The kitchen is rarely perceived as a hub for smart tech, but this can change with the right range hood.

At CopperSmith, our team is committed to enhancing your home design and functionality with innovative appliances that are better equipped to meet your needs and lifestyle preferences. What can a smart range hood do for homeowners?

The introduction of smart technology as part of the appliance design includes advanced sensors that bring the range hood functionality further. Sensors can detect the presence of moisture, smoke or heat. This will ensure the range hood can automatically adjust the ventilation for optimal performance, regardless of what you are doing in the kitchen. This is a great idea for homeowners who want to take the hassle out of cooking.

But that’s not all of it! Smart range hoods can also offer remote applications, such as remote control for smooth and stress-free handling. You can adjust the fan settings or turn it on and off without needing to be near the range hood. Voice control can also become an option in a modern household as the smart home ecosystem evolves.

Finally, innovative designs will soon be able to share data with relevant networks, allowing for remote troubleshooting and diagnostics. Homeowners will be notified of potential maintenance or repair requirements before facing significant performance problems.

If your household relies on smart technology for day-to-day tasks and maintenance, it makes sense to look for range hoods that seamlessly integrate with smart hubs and control platforms.

Emerging technologies are likely to transform the range hood markets in the upcoming years. In other words, if you are still in the planning stage and unsure when to start, it may be worth delaying remodeling so you can experience some of the newest and more advanced tech with your future range hood.

Range Hood Ideas That Work Without Ventilation

Typical range hood designs are ducted, which means they use vents to circulate and eliminate the pollutants generated by cooking. So, if you are remodeling a kitchen that already has a ventilation system installed with its current range or vent hood, you will be looking for ducted range hood ideas. Thankfully for you, the majority of range hood designs are suitable for ducted installations.

However, if you are installing the kitchen in an area that did not previously have a ventilation system, such as moving the kitchen into a new part of the house, there are some options available. First of all, the common choice would be to install a duct before installing the range hood.

However, you can also find highly effective ductless range hood models. To put it clearly, a ductless range hood is a hood installed in a location that doesn’t contain a ventilation duct. Ductless range hoods work by using a blower that draws the air in and filters odors and pollutants before expelling the clean air. This method can be even more effective than traditional ducted installation as the air is recirculated several times through a carbon filter for enhanced purification.

The process is quieter than ducted range hoods, which makes ductless models a fantastic choice in households with low soundproofing materials. They can keep noise to a minimum, hence causing less disruption to your day-to-day life. Finally, if you are looking for an energy-efficient solution, ductless range hoods operate at a lower speed with no ventilation connection. As a result, they consume less energy than their ducted cousins.

As a rule of thumb, the presence of a duct will determine whether your range hood model will be ducted or ductless. Another thing to keep in mind when choosing your range hood is your local climate. In colder climates, the heated air inside your home can sometimes escape through the vents, which means the house temperature could drop in winter when you are using a ducted range hood.

Whether you opt for ducted or ductless range hoods, you will need to ensure that you understand how to maintain your appliance to preserve its performance. Both models have different maintenance needs. They also come with different performance abilities and costs, so make sure to compare your options carefully. In some cases, it may be more efficient to install a duct in a ductless room.

Stove Hood Ideas For Kitchens of All Sizes

Homeowners will find that range hoods come in 3 standard sizes ranging from 24” to 36”. The assumption that bigger range hoods are better is inaccurate. The best range hood size for your kitchen will be determined by several factors. At CopperSmith, we recommend figuring out first whether your kitchen can fit a range hood.

There is no magical formula here. The smaller range hoods have a 24-inch-wide hood. This will be the minimum space requirements to fit the appliance. Secondly, each range hood size is designed to clean the air above your cooktop. In other words, the range hood must be wider than your stove to be able to capture all pollutants and smoke. To put it clearly, a 24” range hood has a smaller range size, 18”. Your range hood will not be performing effectively when placed above a cooktop stove that is wider than the hood itself. You can read more about the ideal range recommendations per hood size here

Another aspect to take into account when changing your range hood is the size of your remodeled kitchen. You will need to understand the volume of your kitchen to calculate the maximum CFM the range hood will need to move.

CFM stands for cubic feet per minute.

Kitchen volume: height x width x depth in feet

For example, in a 9-foot by 10-foot by 8-foot room, the cubic feet volume is 9x10x8= 720 cubic feet.

To calculate the CFM:

CFM: (kitchen volume x 15) / 60

For the above kitchen volume, the CFM is calculated as follows: (720x15)/60 = 180 CFM

This determines the minimum CFm required for your kitchen size.

Coming back to stove hood ideas for all kitchen sizes, you will need to establish a list of all the models that:

  • Have a hood that fits in your space
  • Have a range that can fit comfortably above the stove top
  • Have the minimum required CFM performance

Bear in mind that smaller hoods are less likely to work in a large kitchen, as they can’t meet the minimum CFM requirements.

Range Hood Inspiration: Choosing The Right Range Hood Type

One common issue for kitchen remodels is the size of the appliance, as addressed above. It is important to note that there is plenty of range hood inspiration that can allow you to fit your appliance in the best possible placement.

The good news is that there is more than one placement available for a range hood inside the kitchen. So, that’s why we recommend working with 3D visualization plans, so you can quickly figure out whether a design will work and how to adjust your remodel project accordingly. At CopperSmith, we provide a 3D configurator service that you can use as part of your quote request process. This is a great way to try out different options and understand what works best for your layout. Don’t hesitate to reach out to our team to find out more.

Range hoods can be island mounted, wall mounted, countertop, under-cabinet range hoods, or even inserts. By experimenting with different range hood placements via our 3D configurator, you can also determine the most efficient position for your dream cooktop without necessarily compromising on size.

For example, there may not be wall space for a wall mounted range hood above a large stove. But, moving the stove to an island can free up enough space for a suitable island mounted appliance.

Our advice for every remodeling project is to start with your must-haves and work from there. For example, if your cooktop size is set in stone, you can work from there to determine the right range hood size, and then the best placement in the kitchen.

Custom Range Hood Ideas: A Decorative Statement

That being said, an important part of a kitchen redesign project is the possibility to create a purposeful, functional and inviting cooking space. When the priority is to find appliances that meet your requirements, it can be easy to overlook decor and style.

Range hoods are functional appliances that need to deliver a specific performance. However, they are a prominent appliance that can take a lot of space in the room. That’s precisely why, at CopperSmith, we believe that a stylish range hood can become the centerpiece of your kitchen decor. Range hoods can come in a variety of styles, including materials, colors, and overall designs. When your range hood is apparent, aka when you are not using an insert placement, it can offer an eye-catching focal point of interest. As such, it makes sense to look for models that can integrate harmoniously into the overall finish of the kitchen.

We are proud to provide custom range hood finishes to help you design the range hood of your dreams.
