So much of interior design comes down to creating spaces that fit in their greater surroundings. In other articles, we have highlighted CopperSmith clients who have designed kitchens that were perfectly at home near the beach, in the mountains, and in many other settings. The best kitchens don’t just look good in a vacuum or in pictures, but they make complete sense when you walk in and pair the design to the location where it is found.

In this case, we are talking about a home in Washington, D.C. Obviously, this is an urban environment, and homeowner Jeffrey Wagener wanted to create something that fit this environment while also bringing in just a touch of a farmhouse vibe. Obviously, he succeeded, and we'll talk more below about what makes this kitchen so perfect.
Urban Design is Balanced Nicely by Farmhouse Elements
If Jeffrey had decided to keep his kitchen strictly in the category of urban design, it still would have looked great. And, to be sure, there are many components in the kitchen that do speak to the urban landscape that it occupies. The painted white cabinets are in that category, for one, along with the stainless appliances, clear glass light fixtures, and the white counters with marbling. It’s all very lovely, with straight lines and a very tidy appearance.
With that said, this design goes a little deeper, as some other touches of farmhouse kitchen design were incorporated to give the room an extra dimension. The exposed brick on the wall behind the cooktop is the primary example. It’s a touch that brings different colors to the space, as well as a texture that wouldn’t have been present otherwise.

Another farmhouse element is the cabinet doors with glass fronts. Exposing the inside of a few of the cabinets through the clear glass gives the kitchen a welcoming feeling and prevents the clean lines and largely monochrome palette from becoming too cold.
Speaking of the color palette in the kitchen, there is one other creative touch that you have to look closely at the pictures to see. The cabinets under the island are painted a soft shade of green, separating them from the white that is used throughout most of the rest of the room. That’s a nice difference that really works well, especially when it is balanced against the dark flooring.
We Love the Classic CX4 in This Space
With the upper cabinets in place on either side of the range, the stage was set for a beautiful hood to drop into the middle and complete the kitchen. That role is played by the Classic CX4, and it couldn’t have been a better choice.
We love two things specifically about picking this custom vent hood design. The first is the dramatic curve that the hood offers as it drops from top to bottom. Curving out elegantly, it’s one of the only rounded shapes in the room, which automatically allows this luxury kitchen hood to stand out and draw attention.

Our other favorite feature is the use of Light Antique Brass straps as a finish touch on the handcrafted copper hood. The rest of the hood is a Brushed Stainless Steel finish, so adding the brass finished straps on top is a wonderful contrast that works just right with everything else.
A Clean Look with Many Details
The closer you look at this kitchen, the more interesting details you are able to uncover. We already talked about the glass cabinet doors that were used strategically in a part of the kitchen that was already going to draw a lot of visual interest. Also, those hanging glass light fixtures are a fun choice that lends some personality to the space while also being functional in lighting up the main workspace.
Another little detail we like is the use of straight drawer pulls and cabinet handles to carry the pattern of straight lines throughout the kitchen. Something else could have been used, like round knobs, but the effect just wouldn’t have been the same. With all of the handles on the upper cabinets oriented vertically, there is a very orderly and organized feel to the entire space.
Behind the Beauty is a Functional Kitchen
The aesthetic appeal of this kitchen is not in question. If you were to think about preparing a meal here, however, you’d see that it is just as suitable for actual cooking as it is to be the subject of a photo shoot.

One of the keys to creating a functional kitchen is keeping all of the essentials within easy reach of one another. Here, that means being able to turn around from the sink and reach the cooktop, the ovens, and the fridge all within just a step or two. There’s no walking across the room to get what you need, or having to go around a corner to retrieve a utensil. It’s all right there, waiting to be put to use. We love it when a kitchen manages to balance form and function in a way that doesn’t require sacrificing either half.
