Not every design needs a specific theme. Some homeowners want to tie their kitchen remodeling projects to one central idea, and while that can work beautifully in many cases, it is not required. There is also an eclectic, unexpected path that can be followed, as demonstrated in this creative kitchen designed by Somerville, MA, homeowner Josh Zisson.

CopperSmith was fortunate to be able to create two sinks for Josh’s project. The sinks lend a unique touch to a space that is marked by a variety of different, intriguing elements. We invite you to learn more about this kitchen below, as it is an interesting study in what is possible when the right custom elements are combined with a clear vision of what the finished space can be.

The Beauty of Eclectic Modern Design

There is beauty to be found in surprise. When something is unexpected, it can be perceived as even more attractive and appealing than it might have been otherwise. Eclectic modern design is enjoyable in large part because you will see things, or get to do things, that wouldn’t necessarily fit neatly into any specific design box.

When looking at the kitchen that Josh created in his Somerville home, we see some of that represented clearly. The most obvious example of this concept is the amazing green and white tile backsplash he placed above the cooktop. This is surely the featured element of the whole kitchen, and it captures attention immediately. The pattern is fun and unique, and the use of small square tiles made it possible to craft something wonderfully interesting.

With all this talk about the unexpected, it would be easy to think that an eclectic kitchen like this is just the result of throwing a bunch of random components together. That’s not it at all, however. Plenty of forethought and planning went into creating this kitchen, as is always the case when someone aims for a design that can be described as eclectic modern. For instance, the hood and cooktop coordinate nicely, and the drawer pulls play nicely with the dark countertops that were chosen. With a bit of coordination and some intentional chaos, the space came together perfectly.

Two Unique Copper Sinks in One Kitchen

At CopperSmith, our role in this kitchen project was to create two sinks. One was a large Undermount SB Kitchen Sink, and the other was a smaller Bar SB sink. Each used a Weathered Copper finish with a smooth texture. The fact that there are two sinks in the kitchen is not only a nice functional bonus, but it also allows for coordination between these two copper custom kitchen sinks. The copper bar sink plays off the main sink visually, and the pairing adds a nice touch that helps bring the space together.

Customization Makes Everything Possible

Shortly after getting started on this project, Josh realized that it was going to be necessary to order the sinks from a custom supplier to make sure they fit properly in the space he had available. This felt intimidating at first, but partnering with CopperSmith took the stress away. Suddenly, he had a partner who was dedicated to making sure he got exactly what was needed without sacrificing a bit on quality.

Specifically, Josh encountered a problem of space underneath one of the sinks. There is a hot water dispenser under the sink, and if the drain hole was cut in the center – as is standard for most sinks – the disposal motor was going to interfere with that dispenser. So, the drain needed to be off-center by a few inches. For the other sink, the front flange needed to be only an inch wide, rather than the customary two. It is unlikely that Josh would have ever been able to meet these exact specs when shopping among stock sink options, but it was no problem at all for CopperSmith to meet these requests and dial everything in perfectly.

Copper is an Ideal Kitchen Material

There is so much to like about using copper in a kitchen, and those beneficial traits certainly apply when it is used for sinks. First, there is the antimicrobial nature of a weathered copper sink. It naturally fights back against bacteria, so it helps to keep the sink and those who use it healthier. In an area where germs can run rampant, it’s a nice bit of insurance to have a sink material that will do its part to add a layer of protection.

Copper is also appealing because of the patina it will pick up over time. The copper sinks we delivered to Josh’s home already look great, and they’ll only continue to get better as the years go by. They will become warmer and richer and take on their own unique character as the patina develops.

Bringing a New Kitchen to Life with CopperSmith

It's easy to be intimidated by the process of renovating a kitchen. Even with a vision in mind, finding all of the right pieces – and making those pieces fit – is not easy. That process is particularly tricky for the average homeowner who doesn’t have experience in the design world.

For Josh Zisson, working with CopperSmith turned out to be the ideal solution for the challenges he was facing. Here’s what he had to say about the experience –

“When I decided we wanted copper sinks in our new kitchen, I didn’t immediately realize that we would need them to be customized…I was worried that getting this done right would be a problem, but working with CopperSmith was a dream. They sent drawings for our builder to confirm, and even made a few additional adjustments at no charge.”

So, the experience of dealing with our team was seamless from start to finish. And, as for the sinks themselves? Josh was equally impressed with the quality of the products –

“The sinks arrived looking beautiful and have only gotten better since we’ve been using them. The weathered copper finish has taken on a lovely patina, contrasting beautifully with our black granite counters. I’m absolutely thrilled, and would absolutely work with CopperSmith again.”
