Choosing the correct size range hood is a straightforward but critical factor in the aesthetic and practical function of your kitchen.

When you design a vent hood with us, you'll choose the mount style, width, and height. All of these will affect the geometry of your range hood, and you should take care to measure your space thoroughly before making these decisions.

All custom vent hoods by World CopperSmith receive a detailed CAD drawing before production, so you'll be sure you're receiving the right range hood size. Let's take a deeper look at the pertinent measurements for this process.

How to measure for a range hood?

Standard range hood dimensions are comprised of width, height, and depth. Width and height are fully customizable to the inch, while the depth of your hood will vary based on the mount style you choose.

Width

The width of your range hood corresponds to the left-to-right width of your stovetop. Facing your stove, measure all the way from the leftmost to the rightmost points. Industry-standard is to make canopy hoods of at least the same width as your stove.

To ensure full exhaust capture and minimize the possibility of harmful particulates escaping into the home, some choose to make their hoods slightly wider than the stove. A powerful range hood with a high-CFM fan will be fine being the same width as the stove, while weaker fans may benefit from being slightly larger, but you don't want to have your range hood stick out too far and obstruct other features of the kitchen.

Height

The height of your range hood is a full measure from the bottom of the apron all the way up the crown. The correct height is found through this formula: ceiling height - cooktop height - space between cooktop and bottom of the hood.

For a gas range, you'll want the bottom of your hood to land 24"-30" above the stove. For an electric range, you'll need slightly less space - between 20"-24" above your stove.

An example: 96" (8 ft) ceiling - 36" cooktop height - 30" space between stove and bottom of hood = 30" range hood height.

Depth

Island range hoods are deeper than wall-mount range hoods. The specific depth will vary based on the insert fan you choose.

Island-mount hoods with a 295, 395, or 610 CFM insert fan will have a depth of around 27". A 1260 CFM fan will garner a depth of around 31".

Wall-mount hoods for a 295, 395, or 610 CFM fan will have a depth around 22"-23". A 1260 CFM fan: 24"-26".

How to measure for a range hood filter?

With the width, height, mount-style, and insert fan chosen, we take care of the rest. Your new range hood inserts will fit perfectly and install easily, ensuring proper filtration for your kitchen air whether you're using stainless steel baffle filters in a ducted hood or heavy-duty charcoal filters in a ductless hood.

How to measure duct size for a range hood?

The more powerful the insert fan, the larger the ductwork needed to allow efficient airflow. Detailed in our installation manuals, the breakdown is as follows, in ascending order of duct size:

  • 390 CFM Remote Blower: 6"
  • 395 CFM Pro Series: 7"
  • 610 CFM Pro Series: 8"
  • 835 CFM Remote Blower: 8"
  • 1260 CFM (Remote or Pro Series): 10"

Be sure to use metal ducting intended for the high heat of kitchen exhaust.

How to measure for an under-cabinet range hood?

For an under-cabinet range hood, you have to make sure that the width you choose will fit in between the cabinets that flank the stovetop. Be advised that additional rivets and straps may add up to 5/8 of an inch to the total width. Communicate your space restrictions and be sure to check the CAD drawing for final approval.

How to measure range hood power?

The ventilating power of a range hood insert fan is measured in the cubic feet of air per minute moved through the ventilation system.

There are several ways to evaluate your CFM requirement. Read our article on extractor fans for a detailed breakdown of how to choose the right CFM for your space, or reach out to our customer service for help!

The perfect size hoods from CopperSmith

While the names for range hoods vary around the world, the crucial measurements are the same. There are no "Canada range hood sizes" or "English hood depths," only the occasional conversion from centimeters to inches or vice versa.

Choosing the correct size range hood is a choice with practical and aesthetic weight. Each measurement is well worth your diligence. With the right dimensions in mind, you're a big step closer to your dream range hood from World CopperSmith.

Why is it important to measure range hood dimensions?

At CopperSmith, we provide high-quality range hoods for home and business owners, offering a broad spectrum of sizes and styles. As well as considering the materials used and the aesthetic of the range hood, it’s essential to measure the dimensions and find the perfect size. Here are some critical reasons to measure the dimensions before choosing a new range hood for your kitchen:

  • Effective exhaust capture

One of the most important reasons to consider fitting a range hood in your kitchen is to capture heat and fumes when you’re cooking. Your range hood should be positioned to optimize exhaust capture. To ensure the correct position, it’s crucial to choose the right size and mount option. If your range hood is too small, fumes will escape and permeate the air in your home, reducing air quality. It’s best to order a range hood that is at least as wide as your stove. This will ensure that particles are trapped, preventing air pollution. Always measure your stove before choosing a kitchen range hood.

  • Enhanced air quality

Air quality is essential for health reasons, safety and comfort. If you’re cooking a meal, it’s common to produce steam and smoke. Range hoods use innovative filter systems to eliminate pollutants, enhancing the air quality in your home. This is particularly important if you have children, you have allergies, or you have a respiratory illness.

  • Tackling odors

Cooking up a storm often means generating strong odors. From garlic and spicy dishes to frying onions or fish, it’s very common for smells and aromas to percolate around the kitchen. While some odors may be pleasant, others can be overwhelming. Using a range hood in your kitchen is an excellent way to reduce odors and restore clean, fresh air. It’s important to make sure you have a range hood that is big and powerful enough to cater to your requirements. If you have a large range, you’ll need a hood that covers it fully.

  • Aesthetics

Range hoods serve a practical purpose, but they can also inject style and flair into your kitchen. If you’re looking to design a stunning kitchen with a statement copper range hood or a chic stainless steel or brass range hood, don’t forget to measure the dimensions. You don’t want your range hood to be too small or too big.

Finding the right size range hood for your kitchen

the right size range hood

If you’re ready to buy a new range hood for your kitchen, here are some simple steps to follow to help you find the right size:

1. Outline your requirements: kitchen stoves come in a wide range of sizes and types. Start by outlining your requirements. What kind of stove do you have? What are the dimensions and where do you want the range hood to sit?

2. Consider your personal design preferences: one of the best things about ordering a custom range hood from CopperSmith is being able to tailor the design to match your preferences. We stock a vast selection of range hoods, catering to all kitchens. You can choose whether you want your range hood to fit snugly above the stove or make a statement with a slightly oversized range hood. You can also decide on the depth and mount, as well as the finish and style. We provide custom quotes and we have a fantastic 360 3D configurator tool. 3. Double-check dimensions before ordering: it’s always helpful to double-check dimensions and measurements before ordering a range hood. If you are ordering a range hood as part of an extensive remodel or renovation project, order the stove first in case you change your mind. Check the measurements of the new range and then choose the dimensions for your range hood.

4. Seek advice: if you’re not sure how to measure your stove properly, or you have questions about range hood dimensions or mount options, don’t hesitate to seek expert advice. The experienced, talented team at CopperSmith can help with everything from taking measurements to selecting the perfect design for your kitchen. We are here to offer advice or personalized suggestions based on your needs.
