Playing with patterns is a timeless way to bring visual interest to any design. The human eye is naturally drawn to patterns, and when they are used strategically, interesting patterns can change the entire feel of a kitchen, bathroom, or any other space.

The key word in that previous sentence is “strategically”. Patterns have to be used carefully, as they can easily overwhelm a design and suddenly turn into a detractor. Fortunately, that was not the case in the kitchen of Jennifer Riggs. Jennifer had a specific vision in mind for her kitchen in Littlestown, PA, and with a little help from CopperSmith, she was able to bring that vision to life beautifully. Let’s take a closer look at this impressive project below.
Patterns Work Perfectly in Transitional Design
By its very nature, transitional design brings two different types of design together into a cohesive package. That’s great when it works well, but it’s not always so easy to connect traditional and contemporary components in a way that makes sense and is pleasing to the eye. Fortunately, patterns can enter the picture at this point and save the day.

When used properly, as they are in this kitchen, a patterned backsplash kitchen design can draw the eye and tie together the various individual pieces that make up the space. There are multiple places in a kitchen where patterns can be used, but the backsplash is by far the most popular choice, and that’s the tactic that was used here.
This design actually utilizes two different patterned backsplash tiles, with one under the hood and the other used in the rest of the kitchen. By opting for a different backsplash tile under the hood, attention is naturally drawn to that area, making it the highlight of the whole room.
Copper Lends Warmth to a Kitchen
In the case of this kitchen, the patterned tiles are doing the heavy lifting in terms of adding visual interest. Also, the wood grain present in the flooring brings another element that draws the eye and lends some weight to the traditional side of things. What was needed among these elements was something that would warm up the kitchen and give it a central element that everything else can work around.
That component, of course, was the Classic CX3 Range Hood from CopperSmith. While this artisan range hood looks great in any finish and texture, Jennifer made wise choices here to tie the hood in with the rest of her new kitchen. By keeping things simple with a New Penny finish that stays true to the natural tone of copper, and by sticking with a smooth finish, this transitional kitchen style with copper elements allowed the beauty of the material to shine through.
It wasn’t necessary to add any ornate details or additional elements to the hood, because the backsplash and flooring already feature patterns that give the kitchen a unique touch. So, balance is what was needed from the hood, and it was executed perfectly.
Customization Allows for a Perfect Fit
Jennifer may have found it difficult to locate a perfect hood for her kitchen if she were restricted to off-the-shelf options. There are plenty of mass-produced hoods available, but would any of those achieve her design goals and fit properly into the space she needed to fill? Probably not.
CopperSmith leans into full customization because we know that’s the only way for our customers to truly get exactly what they need without any compromise. Everything from the height and width of the piece to the gauge of the metal, the depth of the hood, and the fan insert was selected intentionally with this kitchen in mind.

When looking at the pictures of this completed kitchen, it’s obvious that the hood was custom-built for the space. How else could it have wound up looking so natural in that spot? Through working with CopperSmith, Jennifer was able to put in place a critical piece of her design puzzle, and she even tied it together with a beautiful copper bowl on the counter for a lovely accent.
Embracing Modern Elements for Great Balance
There are plenty of pieces in this upgraded kitchen that lean toward the traditional side of the ledger. The patterned backsplash and wood grain flooring are at the top of that list. There is also the natural copper tone and the curved shape of the hood, and even the glass lighting fixtures over the island are a bit of a nod to the past.
This kitchen remains firmly planted in the 21st century by some of its other features, however. It has a beautiful radiant cooktop built into the counter, stainless appliances, and painted cabinets in two different tones. Those painted cabinets specifically are an element that helps this transitional design balance old and new perfectly.
Finally, it would be a mistake to overlook the white slab counters with marbling in the finish. Those counters are not only great to work on day after day when using the kitchen, but they are a timeless component that will look great during any era and with any other kind of design choices.
A Balanced Design is a Wonderful Thing
In the end, the patterns Jennifer Riggs decided to use in her kitchen remodel with copper accents were employed just right. They provide visual interest and anchor the design with some traditional components that serve as a nice balance for some of the more modern, contemporary elements. Every good design is greater than the sum of its parts, which is certainly something you can say for this kitchen.
As far as the role played by our Classic CX3 Range Hood, we have to say that it fits perfectly in this Pennsylvania kitchen. The sleek, modern shape, along with the smooth finish, looks right at home. By working with CopperSmith, Jennifer was able to custom-order precisely what she needed for the project, and she was left with a timeless kitchen when all was said and done.
