Charming is the first word that comes to mind when thinking about Southern design. With plenty of soft tones, a variety of materials and textures, and abundant visual interest, a space that embraces Southern design is going to feel welcoming and inviting at just a glance.

Even just viewing the pictures of this Charleston, SC kitchen created by JP Horton Interior Design is enough to make you feel like you’ve been invited over for dinner. You can practically smell a tasty meal coming right through the pictures. Those sensations are proof that the design was executed properly, and we’ll look closer below at what makes this kitchen so special.
A Project of Historical Significance
When JP Horton Interior Design had the opportunity to take on this historic kitchen restoration project, it wasn’t just any old house that was being updated. This job was to create a new kitchen in the Historic Daniel Z Duncan House on Tradd Street in Charleston, SC. Like many properties built a century ago, this one contained tons of history but also needed a lot of love to bring it back to a suitable condition for use by a family in the 21st century.

As can be seen in the images on this page, the project was a huge success. While we are focusing here on the kitchen specifically, the entire home looks incredible, and it is now occupied by new owners. Getting to play even a small role in this project was an honor for the CopperSmith team, and we are beyond impressed by how the finished product turned out.
The Warmth of Southern Style
What’s not to love about Southern style? While everyone has their own personal design tastes and preferences, it’s hard to imagine not being drawn to the way Southern homes are designed and finished. There is a warmth that comes through in a Southern traditional kitchen design that is hard to beat, or even describe fully, and all of the little touches and details bring every space to life.

We can look closer at the Southern charm kitchen in the Duncan house to see what makes the design so immediately appealing. For starters, the colors are welcoming and peaceful. The muted blue of the wall is balanced nicely by the green backsplash tiles and the largely gray counters. Nothing is bright and overwhelming, but there is more than enough creativity in the color palette to make the space interesting and comfortable.
The open shelving to the right of the stove is also a fun touch, as is the farmhouse sink. For a relatively small kitchen, which is standard in a home from the early 20th century, every modern feature is included, and the space still doesn’t look crowded. When it’s all added up, this Southern kitchen is one that’s beautiful to look at without feeling like a museum piece. It’s to be appreciated and used all at the same time.
Turning Heads with a Custom Artisan AT2 Range Hood
As described above, and as seen in the images on this page, this kitchen is full of calming, muted tones that blend in nicely with each other. Nothing stands out too much, and every piece feels like it is playing a complementary role. Well, that is, except for the range hood. That piece stands out right from the start, for all the right reasons.

Our Artisan AT2 Range Hood looks perfect in this kitchen. JP decided to go with a New Penny finish and the Beehive Hammered finish, both of which were perfect choices. The custom copper range hood looks bright and fresh in this classical kitchen, and while it stands out, it doesn’t do so in an overbearing way. It draws the eye as the showpiece of the space and then allows the viewer to explore the rest of the room and pick out all of the other amazing details.
Of course, it’s also important to get the function of a quality range hood, especially in a small kitchen. It would be easy to overwhelm this space with the steam and smoke that are produced when preparing a great meal. Thanks to the powerful blower within this CopperSmith range hood, that won’t be a problem for the homeowners. Just flipping on the hood and letting it run will keep the air clear one use after the next.

Embracing Modern Convenience in a Traditional Way
In many ways, this is a traditional Southern kitchen. It has the muted tones, the detailed tile work, the open shelving, and more. It would have fit in just about any era throughout the history of this region of the United States, yet it isn’t stuck in the past in a way that makes it hard to use.
JP Horton found a way to incorporate a large section of countertop for cooking prep work. That kind of work area is common today, but large counters were not a regularly seen feature 100 years ago. Space was also made for a modern refrigerator and freezer combination, a dishwasher, and a large sink. There isn’t anything missing from the space, and any home cook used to the amenities that are featured in today’s kitchens would be right at home.
Playing a Role in History
It's a thrill for us at CopperSmith to see one of our pieces used in the restoration of such a beautiful historic home. What’s even better is to see how the whole design came together thanks to the vision and talent of JP Horton. The space is a masterclass in Southern traditional design, and it’s going to serve the homeowners well for years to come.
Our role in this project is just another example of how CopperSmith is able to rise to the demands of our customers time after time.
