What should I know about replacing a microwave with a range hood?

Although having a microwave over the range has been a popular kitchen design trend for many years, it’s currently a trend that is on its way out. Replacing the microwave with a range hood has now become a common home project. If you’re thinking about joining in on the trend, there are some things you need to know before you get started.

Range hoods are more than just design elements. They whisk away odors and fumes from cooking and help keep the kitchen clean from grease. Over-the-range (OTR) microwaves do have exhaust fans, but they are not nearly as powerful, efficient, or effective as stand-alone traditional range hoods.

If you have already reviewed your range hood options and chosen your kitchen hood model, the next step may be to remove your microwave for hood installation.

Steps to Replace an Over-the-Range Microwave With a Range Hood

These are general steps on how to replace a microwave with a range hood. Some steps may differ depending on the range hood model you are installing. Be sure you always refer to your specific kitchen hood’s installation instructions for the best results.

1. Turn Off the Power and Gas Supply

Always unplug the microwave before working on it. You can also turn off the circuit breaker that powers it. Over-the-range microwave models with a built-in gas stove also require you to turn off the gas supply connected to the appliance before doing anything else.

2. Remove Your Microwave

Using a drill, remove any screws that are connecting the microwave to the wall bracket. If your microwave is hardwired into an electrical system, the electrical wiring will need to be disconnected, likely by a licensed electrician. In this case, it may be beneficial to have someone remove your OTR microwave for you.

Once the electrical wiring is disconnected the screws to the wall bracket are removed, you can detach and carefully take the microwave down.

3. Prep the Space for the New Range Hood

Remove any remaining microwave supports or mounting brackets and clean the area thoroughly. Take measurements of the space to ensure your new range hood will fit.

4. Install the Range Hood Mounting Bracket

If your range hood model includes a mounting bracket, you may need to drill holes to install the bracket. Make sure the bracket is level so that the new range hood will sit properly on it.

5. Connect Power and Ventilation to the Range Hood

Do I need an electrician to replace my microwave with a range hood?

You may need a licensed electrician to connect the electrical connections for range hoods that are hardwired. If you have a plug-in model, you can simply plug it into the nearest electrical outlet.

6. Mount the Range Hood

Lift the range hood up on the mounting bracket or installed screws, then fasten it with bolts or screws until it is firmly attached. Double-check that the brackets and screws or bolts are secure.

7. Test the Installation

Turn on the power and test that the light and fan on your range hood are working properly. If you have a ducted range hood model that is vented outside, check for proper ventilation.

8. Finish Installation

If everything is secure and in working order, you can install any final items to polish off the look of your new kitchen hood, such as panels or additional trim. Double-check for any gaps. If you do find gaps, you can fill them with caulk or trim to make the installation seamless.

Can You Replace Your Microwave With a Range Hood by Yourself?

While you may be able to replace your microwave with a new range hood by yourself, you will want to consider how involved the process is. If your old microwave or your new range hood will be hardwired, you may need a licensed electrician to help with the installation. Though many appliances that simply plug into an outlet may be DIY-friendly, it is wise to err on the side of caution if wiring and electricity are involved.

Even if you don’t hire an electrician or professional installer, consider having someone like a friend or neighbor help you. Extra hands to lift and hold the kitchen hood in place can make the installation job go much smoother.
