Copper’s Natural Anti-Bacterial Properties

Copper is one of the most durable and beautiful materials available for use as a kitchen or bathroom sink.

The much sought after living finish will patina with age. CopperSmith has created several different styles of copper sinks. Our sinks are available in various sizes, styles, and finishes. These sinks are low maintenance and will last for years to come. They are all naturally anti-bacterial and full of distinctive charm. Care and maintenance are dependent on the finish you choose. We offer sinks in a rustic finish, living finish, and sealcoat finish.

Hand Hammered Rustic Finish

Our rustic finish sinks are hand hammered, then heated over a fire. A natural copper color is brought out by applying wax and oil. The surface will age naturally over time.

  • Avoid abrasive cleaning products
  • Use a conditioning oil or natural carnauba wash once every six months to keep colors vibrant

Raw Copper Living Finish Patina

We make our living finish sinks from raw copper sheeting. Because of this, a gorgeous patina will develop over time. For those who prefer the new copper look, these sinks can be scrubbed to maintain brightness.

  • Clean frequently with soap and water
  • Occasionally apply Bayes Teak Cleaning Spray if you want to bring out natural patina colors
  • Scrub with fine wool or a Scotch Bright Pad once a month if you want to maintain the new copper look

Sealcoat Copper Finish

Our seal coat finish products are made using smooth, raw copper sheets, baked to induce a patina color. Then we seal them with a durable coating. As with all copper products, these sinks will naturally change color with time and exposure to the elements.

  • Wash with soap and water
  • Avoid abrasive cleaners
  • Apply a coating of natural carnauba wash once a year to keep colors vibrant
  • Maintain the finish by running water continuously while working with acidic foods such as lemon, pineapple, vinegar, mustard, and ketchup

The beauty, charm, and elegance that come from a copper sink are hard to overlook. When you factor in their durability, anti-bacterial properties, and easy maintenance, they are also hard to pass up. Our copper products are a great investment for your home.

CopperSmith has a real passion for coppersmithing. We create copper products for the kitchen and bathroom, including our various sink designs. We offer copper sinks in three different, low maintenance finishes. Each finish has it is own beautiful and distinct look. Choose from the rustic finish, seal coat finish and living finish. Care and maintenance vary slightly depending on desired look and patina.

Caring for Copper Sinks

Copper sinks are a wonderful choice for your kitchen space. They will provide an opulent design, adding color and warmth to your kitchen countertop. To keep your copper sink in the best possible condition you should use the rinse and wipe method each time you finish using the sink.

When water dries on copper it will often leave behind calcium stains. This will alter the appearance of your sink. Alternatively, if you allow food to remain on the surface then acids present within the food can also alter the finish. That’s why it’s important to wipe and rinse the sink using a dish towel. Remember, copper is a natural antibacterial. As such, there is no need to disinfect the copper, saving you time and effort when cleaning it.

If you do notice that the copper sink has started to lose its natural beauty, then you should consider cleaning it with liquid dish soap. It’s important that this is mild and non-citrus. You can use a no-scratch sponge. Don’t forget, copper is a soft metal. If you are too firm, then you do risk scratching.

While you may notice a few brown spots on the sponge, this is simply because you are scrubbing away the patina that has built up over time. You may also want to consider using a copper surface protectant spray. However, this is not always necessary. What If Your Patina Is Damaged?

Don’t panic if your patina is damaged. The copper surface is a living finish. The patina will naturally regenerate over time. You can continue to use your sink as you normally would and you will still notice it steadily improve.

Caring for Copper Table Tops

If you own a copper table, you don’t need to buy any special products to keep it clean and well-maintained. Most standard kitchen products are suitable.

If you notice dust building up on your copper table, you should use a soft, lint-free cloth to remove it. Alternatively, you can consider using a microfiber duster.

You should treat cleaning your copper table as you would cleaning porcelain or china products. Use a soft cloth that is dampened with warm water. Run the cloth across the table several times before wiping it dry.

If your copper table has a lot of dirt across the surface, then there are alternatives that you can explore instead of a simple clean. You may wish to consider using a non-abrasive scrubbing pad. Or, you could try a soft-bristle cleaning brush. This will not damage or impact the surface of your table.

Caring for Copper Range Hoods

As with any copper product in your home, you should not use any abrasive materials or harsh chemicals to clean your range hood. Instead, if you wish to polish the hood, you need to make sure that you are using a soft cloth. You may also want to cover the hood with a very thin layer of copper polish. Rub the hood with circular motions until the copper is shiny once more. No polish residue should remain when you are finished cleaning the hood.

You can also clean the range hood with a wet sponge and hot water. You should leave the soap on the surface of the range hood for about 12 minutes. This will be enough time to loosen the grease that might have built up across the surface overtime. To learn more about range hoods, check out our kitchen hood buyers guide

Homemade Copper Cleaners

One of the best ways to avoid harsh chemicals when maintaining your copper products is to use a homemade copper cleaner. There are a few of these that can be beneficial for your copper products. Lemon Juice And Baking Soda

If your copper is tarnished, then you should consider using this homemade cleaner. You can apply this to any copper surface that does appear tarnished, using the same small circular motions. Leave the cleaner on for a few minutes before rinsing it off gently and leaving it to dry.  Another option would be to use lemon and table salt. You can apply salt to half a cut lemon. This can act as a natural, abrasive sponge that will be ideal for a wide range of copper products. Generally speaking, it is recommended that you use this for copper cookware that you may have purchased to compliment your sink or your range hood.
