When fruit trees are bowing down heavy with ripe fruit it’s time to make jam! The first time may be intimidating but using this medium copper jam pot will have you making jam like a pro in no time. During the jam-making process and other confectionery procedures, melting sugar blocks reactive copper ions which is why pure, unlined copper is safe to use when making jams, curds, preserves, jellies and confections. Copper also reacts with sugar to preserve the vibrant color and fresh flavor from the garden for your jams. For centuries confectioners have used copper pots due to the even heat distribution and rapid response to temperature change.
This medium copper jam pot is just what you need to get started on the adventure of preserving fruits for all year round. Making traditional grape jelly can take that old school PB&J to a whole new level. A Lemon marmalade is a wonderful way to have a taste of summer on your english muffin in the winter. The choices are endless from traditional blackberry jam to prune plum jam. They can be served on the side with some of your favorite savory meat dishes. If blueberries are your favorite fruit go get at least 10 cups from the farmers market so you can eat some while preparing your recipe. Just 10 cups of fresh blueberries, along with salt, sugar, lemon juice and lemon zest will produce nine half pint jars of blueberry jam so you have some to share with some lucky friends. Some recipes require pectin and some don’t. Before starting your first recipe consider whether you plan on canning your finished product or putting in the frig for immediate consumption. Canning takes some extra time but is simple so don’t be intimidated if you haven’t tried it before. Homemade jams and jellies made with love are a delightful holiday gift.
