Garden in Style: Decor and Design Trends for 2020

garden decor and design trends

Although we’re in the dog days of summer, it’s not too late to update your backyard garden and patio with trendy, functional decor you’ll be able to enjoy straight through autumn! From timeless looks for an outdated backyard to clever concepts for small spaces, these are the top garden decor and design trends that both homeowners and professionals love this year.

1. Bring the comforts of home outdoors.

By 2023, the global outdoor furniture market is expected to grow by 5%. Over the last 6 months alone, online searches for “outdoor bars” increased by 192% and searches related to “outdoor kitchens” grew up 106%. Since this summer has left people around the globe feeling stuck at home, it’s apparent that many are viewing this as an opportunity to use the space in their backyards as an extension of their living or dining areas.

A good first tip, according to Living Spaces designer Shelby Greene, is starting with a general floor plan of your garden and patio space. “Think of your backyard as you would your indoor space, starting with a floor plan,” Greene explains. “Arrange groups of seating, focal points, serving stations and walkways for a trendy feel.” When it comes to choosing the right furniture for the outdoors, try to select sets that would look stunning both inside and outside your house, as this helps to “blur the line” between the indoors and outdoors.

2. Use rounded accessories to open up a cramped space.

If you don’t have room for a big garden, that doesn’t mean you can’t have a stylish and relaxing outdoor getaway! Designer Gabrielle Bocanegra suggests choosing round shapes when it comes to decorating a smaller garden. “Curves soften and open up a space, as opposed to harsh lines and enclosing angles,” states Bocanegra. Instead of opting for rectangular planters for your mini herb garden, accessorize with round copper planters to add some classic beauty and greenery to your patio oasis.

Similarly, Google searches for compact and rounded furniture have risen by over 180% in the past 6 months. Selecting cute egg-shaped chairs and hammocks will give your garden a whimsical look without taking up too much space. As an additional bonus, these pieces are relatively inexpensive and cozy!

3. Add kitchen elements for an upscale garden retreat.

If you love cooking, entertaining, and spending time outside, why not invest in a backyard kitchen setup? Susan Cohan, the founder of Susan Cohan Gardens, says that she’s noticing a rise in outdoor kitchens. “They rival those inside in every aspect, from cabinetry choices to appliances,” Cohen says. “They’re not just for grilling.”

If you’d prefer something simpler, a well-stocked outdoor bar will make your home the go-to place for your friends and family. Add a weather-resistant bar sink, an icemaker, a wine fridge, and some classic copper barware to start serving your guests their favorite drinks!

4. Create coziness with a fire pit.

Spending an evening around a warm fire with your loved ones is a great way to relax at the end of the day. From summer night cookouts to autumn bonfires, having a fire pit in your garden will create a natural focal point and instantly make your space feel more inviting and cozy. Furthermore, fire pits come in a wide range of shapes, sizes, colors, and fuel types, so you can easily find one that will complement the decor you already have.

5. Take your garden to new heights.

If you want to add more color to an outdoor wall or fence, a vertical garden can brighten up your yard without taking up precious ground area. With a few simple tools, cute planters, and your favorite herbs or flowers, you can transform a drab blank space into a vibrant and maintainable “living wall.” These are just a few ideas to inspire your own unique vertical garden:

  • Create a trendy DIY vertical succulent planter with some chicken wire, landscaping fabric, and a wooden frame.
  • Mount a birdhouse or bird feeder to the wall.
  • Plant trailing plants in a few wall planters to create an instant “waterfall of greenery.”
  • Use flower pot rings to simply elevate the planters and flower pots you already have.
  • DIY a pretty garden trellis to help your home-grown veggies flourish!
